The local rugby league kicks off again this weekend with a mouthwatering match between two great rivals, East London Police and Walter Sisulu University (WSU).
The match promises to be a great game full of entertainment as both sides prefer a running rugby style of play. Although historically Police has always beaten WSU, it will be interesting to see how the game develops on Saturday as both teams have a lot to prove. On one hand you have Police, who started the season poorly by losing 5 games in a row (Super 12 competition), only to bounce back and win their first 2 league games. On the other you have WSU, who did brilliantly to reach the playoffs in the Varsity competition, only to then lose their initial league games. Both teams, however, feel they have a good chance of coming out victorious on Saturday.
“We hear that the Police side is taking this game so seriously that they are even practicing twice a day,” said Sipho Metula, the WSU head coach. “I am glad that they are taking us seriously because we are coming all guns blazing. Expect a great game with our boys putting up a big fight. We have prepared well and are very confident of winning on Saturday,” he concluded.
Police however, also feel that they have an upper hand coming to Saturday. “The game will definitely be tough, but we have experience and knowhow when it comes to big games. At the end of the day we are playing students and we need to treat them as the kids that they are. I see no reason why our winning streak against them shouldn’t continue beyond Saturday,” claimed a bullish Police senior player, Kuhle Thumana.
Both teams are highly motivated and confident, but only one team will win. Come to Police Park (Near Hemingways, East London) to see which of these two it is. The first game kicks off at 14.00 tomorrow (Saturday 05 May 2018).
Extra Note: Police Park is having a grand opening of the club under its new management tonight (Friday) starting at 18.00. There will be braai packs, great specials on refreshments, entertainment and loads of fun.
